During April Whitey van Pletsen, Honorary Ranger from Bankenveld, entertained the Brownies from Potchefstroom on the art of ringing birds. The girls had the opportunity to learn the names of some of the birds common to the area and those who were not too scared, could handle them before releasing it.
A group of boys from Promosa township spent a wonderful day with the Honorary Rangers from Bankenveld region in the Vredefort Dome. On the early morning hike, the boys were encouraged to use all their senses in observing nature: loud and quiet sounds, natural and artificial sounds as well as the sounds of animals, things they could smell, objects that can move by itself and those which are moved by the wind. We had a lot of fun when all these observations were discussed and everybody agreed that it was a privilege to be in the beautiful environment of the Dome.
Everybody took part in a game to demonstrate the inter-connectedness of all species using rope and each boy presenting a specific animal. Needless to say, everyone wanted to be a lion!!
Using only natural material like pieces of grass, leaves and bark and the pigments from soil, grass, flowers and berries each one created a poster demonstrating something about our National Parks.
Everybody agreed that this beautiful autumn day in the Dome was really well spent!!!
