I am sure many of you have seen this tree in KNP. It always fascinates me and sets me to wondering how it landed up like this.

Hi Moggiedog

This is awesom, where about did you see it in Kruger, I would love to go and investigate because I'm lucky enough to be married to a Horticulturist and plant specialist, maybe my wife can give us some clarification

Ukwazi - It is on the left hand side of the road if you are heading from Crocodile bridge to Lower Sabie on the Skukuza/Lower Sabie road.
Unfortunately I deleted the GPS co-ordinates else I could have given you the exact location. If my memory is correct it is only a few kilometers from Croc bridge.

I do know that many moons ago I had my young stallion stolen. When we found him I lead him home and he got a tad out of hand. I was alone and didn't want him to get away so I dug my heels in and I managed to wrap the reins round a small sapling. It got bent over and wrapped around its own trunk
Many years later - when I went back that way - it had grown into a big tree with a strange twisting of the truck - but it was not knotted in the same way as the tree in the pic.
Perhaps a similar thing happened to this tree when it was small and managed to grow into this strange shape.
In my mind I see a young Ellie tormenting the tree - and the tree managed to overcome the odds and survive in its twisted state - who knows.....
